What is Hakomi?

Beyond words, inside experience.

Most human communication is nonverbal. Hakomi reads bodily signals — gestures, posture, breath and tone of voice — as doorways into unconscious beliefs.

Mindfulness

A relaxed, nonjudgmental state of inner observation reaches depths ordinary conversation cannot — revealing the root beliefs that organize our habits.

Body-Centered

The body is a doorway to the psyche. Hakomi works "bottom-up": from bodily sensation toward meaning, and from meaning toward transformation.

Compassionate Relationship

Healing happens inside a safe, attuned therapeutic relationship. Research shows the therapist's presence predicts success far more than any technique.

Six Core Principles

The principles of Hakomi

Before it is a set of techniques, Hakomi is a stance and a worldview. These six principles permeate every moment of the method.

Awareness

Mindfulness

Relaxed, nonjudgmental inner observation is the main road to unconscious material. Both practitioner and client cultivate deep attention.

Gentleness

Nonviolence

We do not fight resistance; we befriend it. When defenses are supported, they soften on their own and reveal the wisdom within them.

Soma & Psyche

Mind–Body Integration

Mind and body together express our core beliefs about ourselves and the world. Posture, gesture and body structure are the language of those beliefs.

Interconnection

Unity

A person is a living, organic system of interconnected parts. Healing is the reconnection of parts that have lost touch with each other.

Self-Organization

Organicity

When the parts communicate with the whole, people naturally find their own direction. The practitioner imposes nothing; they support organic unfolding.

The Heart of Hakomi

Loving Presence

The therapist's compassionate, open and appreciative stance is the heart of Hakomi and the ground of safe transformation.
